(Dana Gioia)
Poetry Out Loud、The Big Read

The Deepest Conversation You'll Ever Hear About Writing — Dana Gioia
A three-hour conversation with David Perell on the How I Write podcast, and the fullest self-portrait of Gioia's practice on record. He composes by saying lines aloud — reciting a moth quatrain born at 12:30 at night in the fog — and argues that being transfixed by a moment of your own life 'is what art is all about.' The centerpiece is his account of how poetry lost its audience: the New Critics figured out how to analyze poems correctly, 'and it killed the audience,' replacing recitation with visual analysis of the dead silent page. His own pedagogy inverts it — experience, perform, memorize, and only then analyze — and he describes students who memorized poems as 'awakening themselves to their own human capacity.'

What is Poetry? 10 observations about the art - (Dana Gioia)
The first talk in Gioia's introductory series on the art of poetry. In ten compact observations he lays out what poetry actually is: an art older than literacy, rooted in sound, rhythm, and memory rather than the printed page. Against the classroom habit of treating poems as puzzles to be decoded, he argues for poetry as a way of using language at its fullest — charged with music, emotion, and meaning at once.

John Vervaeke
(Awakening from the Meaning Crisis);而 Gioia 談到課堂上背誦詩的學生時說,他們是在「喚醒自己身上的人的能力」——他描述批評如何殺死詩的讀者:以「對死寂紙頁的視覺分析」取代了朗誦——正是 Vervaeke 所診斷的那種失落的個案研究。
Sean Dorrance Kelly
Iain McGilchrist
