About
Peter Steinberger is an Austrian software developer, born in 1986, who studied at the Vienna University of Technology. In 2010 he founded PSPDFKit, a PDF framework for iOS that grew into a document-processing company inside apps used by nearly a billion people, bootstrapped until a strategic investment from Insight Partners in 2021; it now operates as Nutrient. After leaving the company and stepping away from tech, he was drawn back by AI coding agents, and in November 2025 released Clawdbot, a personal agent reached through messaging apps and built on Mario Zechner's Pi; renamed Moltbot and then OpenClaw, it became GitHub's most-starred software project. In February 2026 he joined OpenAI to lead its work on the next generation of personal agents, with OpenClaw moving to an independent open-source foundation. He calls himself "a builder at heart."

OpenClaw, Steinberger's personal agent and the most-starred project on GitHub, runs on Zechner's Pi, and its own credits list Steinberger as 'Creator, lobster whisperer' and Zechner as 'Pi creator, security pen tester.' Ronacher, who knows both, names the two temperaments the project joined: Zechner 'very grounded,' Steinberger aiming for 'sci-fi with a touch of madness.'

Ronacher credits 'my friend Peter' with getting him and Zechner 'hooked on this idea, and agents last year': the always-reachable personal agent that became OpenClaw. The influence ran through Pi. Ronacher built his own Telegram bot on it, called it 'the coding agent that I use almost exclusively,' and his company went on to take it in.

Three days before he announced he was joining OpenAI, Steinberger spent more than three hours with Fridman on #491, retracing OpenClaw from a one-hour WhatsApp prototype ('I was annoyed that it didn't exist, so I just prompted it into existence') through the renames, Moltbook and the prompt injection problem he calls unsolved. It is the fullest first-person account of the year's most viral agent, recorded just before its creator chose a lab.
