About

Elon Musk is a South African-born entrepreneur who leads Tesla and SpaceX and founded the AI company xAI. After co-founding Zip2 and X.com (which merged into PayPal), he founded SpaceX in 2002 and became Tesla's CEO in 2008 — the companies that made reusable rockets and mass-market electric cars real. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a non-profit counterweight to concentrated AI power, left its board in 2018, and founded xAI in 2023 to build the Grok family of models. He also co-founded Neuralink, which develops brain-computer interfaces, and acquired Twitter in 2022, rebranding it as X. Few figures embody the tension of the AI era more visibly: he has long called artificial intelligence one of civilization's greatest risks while racing to build it.

In late May 2024 LeCun answered an xAI recruiting post by questioning Musk's claims about imminent AGI and catastrophic risk, and the exchange sprawled, over a week on X, into a fight about what science is. LeCun's position was that research which is not published, checked, and reproducible is not yet science — 'secrecy hampers progress and discourages talents from joining the effort' — and that his own count since 2022 stood above eighty papers; Musk told him to try harder, then answered a long post with a meme. The dispute matters less for the insults than for the fault line it exposed: whether the frontier is a scientific enterprise or a proprietary one.

Musk was among DeepMind's seed investors, one of the people who let the lab exist before Google bought it. In January 2017 the two sat on the same Asilomar panel, moderated by Tegmark, on whether superintelligence was science or fiction — Hassabis the builder with a twenty-year plan, Musk the backer who had by then co-founded OpenAI out of fear of the kind of thing he had helped fund.
