OpenClaw: The Viral AI Agent that Broke the Internet - Peter Steinberger | Lex Fridman Podcast #491

Lex Fridman

AgentsAISoftware engineering

Three days before he announced he was joining OpenAI, Steinberger retraces OpenClaw from a one-hour prototype that wired WhatsApp to a coding agent (“I was annoyed that it didn’t exist, so I just prompted it into existence”) through the renames from Clawdbot to Moltbot to OpenClaw, the first at Anthropic’s request, with crypto squatters grabbing handles in the gap. He calls the agent-only social network Moltbook “the finest slop” and “art,” argues that many of its viral screenshots were human-prompted, and says plainly that prompt injection is unsolved: run agents on private networks, sandboxed, with allow lists and strong models rather than cheap ones. On programming he describes running three to eight agents at once by voice and warns against what he calls “the agentic trap.” The last hour turns to money and conditions: he says the project costs him $10,000 to $20,000 a month, that Meta and OpenAI are the labs he finds most interesting, and that OpenClaw staying open source is his one fixed requirement.
