Bats perceive the world through echolocation. They emit ultrasonic squeaks and build a picture of reality from the returning echoes. They navigate in complete darkness, catching insects on the wing.
We can study bat neurology exhaustively. We can map every neural pathway, understand every signal. We can know, in objective terms, exactly how a bat's sonar works.
But can we ever know what it's like to be a bat?
The Argument
Thomas Nagel argued that the answer is no. We can imagine having webbed arms, hanging upside down, eating bugs. But we'd only be imagining what it would be like for us to behave like a bat—not what it's like for a bat to be a bat.
The bat's experience is organized around echolocation in a way fundamentally alien to our visual, spatial way of being. Their phenomenal world—the way things appear from their perspective—is inaccessible to us.
Subjective vs Objective
Science aims for objectivity—knowledge that doesn't depend on any particular point of view. This is its power: the laws of physics are the same whether you're a bat or a human.
But consciousness is inherently subjective. It is constituted by a particular point of view. To remove the point of view is to remove the phenomenon you're trying to explain.

What Is It Like to Be an LLM?

Consider how different an LLM's "existence" would be:

If there is experience here, it might be so unlike ours that we couldn't recognize it as experience at all. We might be as incapable of understanding AI consciousness as bats are of understanding human vision.
