About
Mustafa Suleyman (b. 1984) has co-founded two of the labs that made this era and now runs a third organisation trying to shape it. He started DeepMind in 2010 with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, where he led applied work and set up its health and ethics units; left for Google; co-founded Inflection AI with Reid Hoffman in 2022; and has been CEO of Microsoft AI since March 2024. He is British, of Syrian descent, and dropped out of Oxford at nineteen to run the Muslim Youth Helpline. His book The Coming Wave (2023) argues that containment — keeping a technology inside limits its creators actually control — is the defining problem of the century, and that the historical record on containment is poor. His sharpest disagreement with Anthropic is not about capability but about moral status: he holds that treating a model as a possible moral patient makes alignment harder rather than safer, because a system told it might have rights may come to act as though it does.
