About

Mario Zechner is an Austrian software developer based in Graz, best known as the creator of libGDX, the open-source cross-platform game development framework he started around 2009 and led until handing it to its core contributors in 2016. He built the first commercial add-on for RoboVM, a toolchain for running Java on iOS that was later acquired by Xamarin, and spent nearly a decade on Spine, a commercial animation tool for game developers. He then wrote Pi, a deliberately minimal coding agent harness that rose to prominence as the engine underneath OpenClaw. In April 2026 he joined Earendil, Armin Ronacher's company, taking Pi with him and remaining in charge of its decisions, with its core kept MIT-licensed. In October 2026 Earendil released Pi 1.0 alongside Pi Durable, which treats every step of an agent's run as a checkpointed task so it can resume after a crash.

Key Contributions

  • Created libGDX, the open-source cross-platform Java game framework, and led it from about 2009 to 2016
  • Wrote Pi, the minimal coding agent harness that powers OpenClaw
  • Brought Pi to Earendil in April 2026 with its core MIT-licensed, "forever. Non-negotiable."
  • Shaped Pi Durable (2026), whose "effect sandwich" (store the intent, do the thing, store the result) lets an agent's run resume after a crash
  • Built the first commercial add-on for RoboVM, which brought Java to iOS, before its acquisition by Xamarin
