About
Armin Ronacher is an Austrian programmer, born in 1989 and based in Vienna, best known as the creator of Flask, one of the two most widely used Python web frameworks, and of the Jinja template engine. He began publishing open-source Python libraries as a teenager in the mid-2000s through the Pocoo projects, which also produced Pygments and Sphinx; his libraries later moved under the Pallets community. He spent a decade at Sentry, where he helped build a regional office, worked on event ingestion and SDKs, and led the teams behind the internal developer platform as VP of Platform. In 2025 he founded Earendil, which took on Pi, the minimal coding agent harness, and shares decisions over it with its creator Mario Zechner; in October 2026 Earendil released Pi Durable, a framework for agents that survive crashes and resume where they stopped. His writing has made him one of the more closely read practitioner voices on agentic coding, including its overuse.

CollaboratedCreator of Pi, Earendil · Creator of libGDX
In April 2026 Zechner brought Pi to Ronacher's company Earendil, keeping charge of its decisions alongside him, and that October the two shipped Pi 1.0 with Pi Durable. They are also each other's usual partner in public: on The Pragmatic Engineer and on Fragmented they explain the harness as a pair, Ronacher supplying the lineage of durable workflows and Zechner the mechanics of the effect sandwich.

Influenced byCreator of OpenClaw · OpenAI
Ronacher credits 'my friend Peter' with getting him and Zechner 'hooked on this idea, and agents last year': the always-reachable personal agent that became OpenClaw. The influence ran through Pi. Ronacher built his own Telegram bot on it, called it 'the coding agent that I use almost exclusively,' and his company went on to take it in.
