Ted Chiang’s debut collection gathers eight stories that treat ideas — free will, language, divinity, mathematics — with the rigor of thought experiments and the weight of fiction. Its centerpiece, “Story of Your Life,” follows a linguist learning an alien language whose grammar reshapes her experience of time; it became the basis for Denis Villeneuve’s 2016 film Arrival.
