關於

Jonathan Rauch is a senior fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution and a contributing writer at The Atlantic, and the author of nine books on public policy, culture and government. He began as a reporter at the Winston-Salem Journal, covered fiscal and economic policy for National Journal and the European Parliament for The Economist. His through-line is a defence of liberalism as working machinery rather than creed: Kindly Inquisitors (1993) argued for free inquiry as the engine of knowledge, and The Constitution of Knowledge (2021) extended it into a defence of truth itself — science, journalism and law as one rule-bound, decentralized network for deciding what is real. He was also among the earliest advocates of same-sex marriage, and his most recent book, Cross Purposes (2025), argues that American democracy depends on a healthy Christianity.

  • Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought (1993; revised 2014), the case for free inquiry as the mechanism that produces knowledge
  • The Constitution of Knowledge: A Defense of Truth (2021), describing science, journalism and law as a single decentralized system for establishing what is real — and diagnosing disinformation and online pile-ons as attacks on it
  • Gay Marriage: Why It Is Good for Gays, Good for Straights, and Good for America (2004), an early and influential argument for same-sex marriage
  • The Happiness Curve (2018), on why life satisfaction tends to dip in midlife and rise after
  • Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Bargain with Democracy (2025), arguing that a deliberately thin liberalism relies on faith traditions to supply meaning it cannot
