Extended Interview: Dario Amodei

The companion to the essay, taped the same day — he mentions partway through that “We Must Pace the Frontier” went out a few hours earlier. This is the argument made for a general audience, and it is worth watching for what the translation hardens and what it softens. Asked whether this is a five-alarm fire, he declines the frame and offers a smaller one: a warning sign. Not a reason to panic, not a reason to shut it down. Slow down, not stop.

The most useful stretch is on the embedded evaluators, where he reaches for a homelier image than the essay does — a food inspector. The interviewer immediately finds the soft spot: can an inspector keep up with something moving this fast? His answer goes past anything in the essay. One of the things the evaluators will be able to report is the rate at which they can keep up, and that rate may be what sets the speed limit. Verification stops being a check on pacing and becomes the mechanism that sets it.

Then a question the essay leaves alone entirely. Asked whether he would hand the technology to government, he says he has always found it strange that a private company is building this, and that he is uncomfortable — but not one government, which he thinks could abuse it as easily as one company could. Some combination of democratically elected ones. Oversight and joint governance rather than handover. The closing answer is the same shape: yes he feels the responsibility, and no, it should not be his alone, or Anthropic’s alone, or any single government’s.
